Welcome - WJ897 & The Leicester Aircraft Preservation Group
Vickers Varsity T1 WJ897 and the Leicester Aircraft Preservation Group
On the 19th August 1984 Vickers Varsity WJ897, a former RAF training aircraft maintained and flown by a group of enthusiasts known as the Leicester Aircraft Preservation Group (LAPG), made its last flight.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the accident. Please use the 'Contact Us' facility on this website if you have any memories you wish to share or have any questions for the site administrators.
WJ897 is mentioned in Tim O'Brien's book "Royal Air Force Syerston: Praesta in Officiis" available from Newark Air Museum (see Links page), Waterstones or direct from Tobbit Publishing here.
To mark the 30th anniversary we are creating a new site mirroring this one but intended to suit tablet computers. It is currently a work in progress and can be found here.
The aim of this website is to tell the story of the aircraft and the accident which befell it, and to provide a memorial for the aviation enthusiasts who died that day in 1984.
Click the page buttons above or hover your mouse over them and then select further pages to see the whole website.
If you have a link to the LAPG or would like to know more, please go to our 'contact us' page.
