Vickers Varsity T1 WJ897 and the Leicester Aircraft Preservation Group
On the 19th August 1984 Vickers Varsity WJ897, a former RAF training aircraft maintained and flown by a group of enthusiasts known as the Leicester Aircraft Preservation Group (LAPG), made its last flight.
WJ897 is mentioned in Tim O'Brien's book "Royal Air Force Syerston: Praesta in Officiis" available from Newark Air Museum (see Links page), Waterstones or direct from Tobbit Publishing here.
Further to the disposal of WJ945 G-BEDV by Duxford Air Museum. There are photos of it being dismantled here. ready for its transfer to Newquay Intenational Airport.
The aim of this website is to tell the story of the aircraft and the accident which befell it, and to provide a memorial for the aviation enthusiasts who died that day in 1984.
